General description

Crassula ovata ‘Gollum,’ commonly known as Gollum Jade or Finger Jade, is a fascinating and unique succulent plant known for its distinctive leaves. It’s a cultivar of the more common Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) and belongs to the Crassulaceae family. The Gollum Jade is characterized by its tubular, elongated leaves that have a peculiar and eye-catching appearance. The leaves are green with red-tinged edges and often have a curled, trumpet-like shape, resembling the fingers of the character Gollum from “The Lord of the Rings.” This succulent typically grows to a height of 60-90 centimeters (24-35 inches) when mature.

Tips

• Light: Gollum Jade thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. It can tolerate some direct morning sunlight but should be protected from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Place it near a window with filtered light or use sheer curtains.
• Watering: Allow the soil to dry out partially between waterings. Water the plant thoroughly when the top 2-3 centimeters (about an inch) of soil feels dry. During the dormant winter months, reduce watering frequency to prevent overwatering.
• Soil Type: Plant Gollum Jade in a well-draining succulent or cactus potting mix. The soil should provide excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
• Coffee Grounds: Coffee grounds are generally not used for succulents like Gollum Jade. These plants prefer lean, well-draining soil and do not require additional organic matter. It’s best to avoid coffee grounds in the soil for this plant.
• Temperature and Humidity: Gollum Jade thrives in average room temperatures between 18°C to 24°C (65°F to 75°F). It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but should be protected from frost. Humidity is not a major concern, as it prefers drier indoor conditions.
• Fertilization: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer formulated for succulents or cacti. Apply fertilizer every 6-8 weeks to provide essential nutrients.
• Pruning: Pruning is rarely needed for Gollum Jade. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves with clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears.
• Repotting: Repot your Gollum Jade every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its current container. Use a slightly larger pot with excellent drainage.
